SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

Employment practice living wage

In steadfast commitment to equitable employment practices, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) ensures that all faculty and staff receive a living wage that meets or exceeds the basic needs of a family of four in East Java. This commitment aligns with the Regional Minimum Wage (UMR) standards as stipulated in East Java Governor’s Decree No. 188/889/KPTS/013/2022 and is reinforced by UNAIR’s internal policies that guarantee wage adequacy for its employees.

Meeting and Exceeding Living Wage Standards

To align salaries with the local cost of living, UNAIR implements rigorous compensation standards for all levels of staff. For instance, the Rector’s Decree No. 1413/UN3/2019 sets minimum salary benchmarks for lecturers, while the recent Rector’s Decree No. 44 of 2022 establishes enhanced pay and supplemental allowances. These guidelines ensure UNAIR’s commitment to fair wages while providing a financial safety net that addresses daily needs and unexpected expenses.

According to UNAIR’s Finance Directorate, all salaries adhere to or surpass the established UMR, ensuring that compensation is sufficient for families in the region. This approach goes beyond statutory requirements by providing a wage that reflects actual living costs, underscoring the university’s dedication to fair employment standards.

Benefits and Financial Support

Beyond base salary, UNAIR staff receive a range of additional benefits designed to foster financial security and well-being. Among these are allowances for meals and transportation, holiday or end-of-year bonuses, and monthly incentives tied to individual workload and responsibilities. These supplemental benefits ensure that all employees experience a balanced quality of life while meeting family and personal financial obligations.

Health insurance coverage for all employees further illustrates UNAIR’s commitment to holistic employee support. This program ensures access to healthcare services without financial strain, thus promoting the health and welfare of staff members and their families.

UNAIR’s structured compensation and benefits policies underscore its commitment to fair, living-wage employment practices in line with regional standards and global Sustainable Development Goals. This approach not only meets legal requirements but also supports the social well-being of employees and contributes to a more sustainable economy in East Java. In establishing these standards, UNAIR sets a high benchmark for universities in Indonesia, demonstrating the institution’s leadership in fostering fair, equitable, and sustainable employment practices within the academic sector.
