Student Access Measures

Universitas Airlangga is consistenly tracking women applicants and female students. evidenced by its female acceptance rates. In 2022, our females acceptance rate is 72% of the 9,247 new enrollees, demonstrating our commitment to gender equality in higher education. This shows an increase of 7% compared to the previous year. Faculty, administrative staff, and leadership positions at Universitas Airlangga are also open to all. Discrimination has no place in the university’s policies, and every effort is made to ensure that admission decisions are based on quality. The transparent and non-discriminatory admission process reaffirms dedication to provide equal opportunities to all.

UNAIR Takes a Bold Stand Against Discrimination in Admissions

Universitas Airlangga regulates student admissions through Circular Letter Number 175 of 2022 concerning Inclusive Campus and Anti-Discrimination that the new student admission process, including female students, is measured regularly (point a). We also provides programs and assistance for the entire academic community, including women (point b); and all participation in student activities, especially by women, will always be supported according to their potential (point c). Also, there is Rector’s Decree Number 226/UN3/2021 concerning Student Admission Schemes. Moreover, the Student Admission Center (PPMB) also regulates that there is no discrimination or harassment against any person because of gender identity and will comply with all non-discrimination, equal opportunity, and affirmative action laws, orders, and regulations. The student’s admissions process should be based on individual quality and be free from discrimination in all its forms.

As our women access scheme, Griya Khadijah Scholarship Program enhances female students from underprivileged backgrounds both within and outside UNAIR by providing dormitory facilities, financial assistance, mentoring, and a development program. We have programme called “Keputrian” that focusly provides training and mentoring programs to upskill female students. We also offer study programs in the Faculty of Science and Technology as well as the Faculty of Advanced and Multidisciplinary Technology that are open to female applicants while the field of engineering in Indonesia is predominantly male-dominated. The 2022 International Summer Program, in partnership with international students, Tirta Ayu Spa, and Gresik Women School held a mentoring session through entrepreneurial skills for women, especially the ones working as online drivers in Surabaya. It also extended its reaching out women batik artisans through community service, and workshops benefiting communities in Batik Village.

Universitas Airlangga is dedicated to promote gender diversity and encouraging applications by women in applied sciences major. In 2022, through the Islamic Economic Development Institute (LPEI), we organised a series of seminars and training programs focused on data science and programming. These programs emphasised text mining methods, offering essential skills for the data-driven job market. We measured that the majority of attendees were women. Moreover, anually, we held Airlangga Education Expo as well as socialization to the high school students to encourage and promote data science, technology, and industrial engineering subjects. It shows that more than 50% female students accepted in those subject in 2022 where data science and engineering subject still dominated by men in Indonesia.

Women’s Progress Measures

Universitas Airlangga firmly upholds its commitment to anti-discrimination, especially against women, through Circular Letter Number 175 of 2022 concerning Inclusive Campus and Anti-Discrimination. This policy ensures that we ban acts of discrimination, especially against women (point d); against perpetrators of women discrimination; and impose sanctions on perpetrators (points d–e). We also guarantee the rights of all academics, including female students, staff, and lecturers at the university (point g). To enforce this policy, the university has established vital support units, including the UNAIR Help Center, the Psychological Services Unit, and UNAIR Hope Helps. This unit helps the academic community, without exception, including women, obtain counseling for all forms of discrimination.

Universitas Airlangga stands firmly committed to the principle of non-discrimination, as outlined in Circular Letter Number 175 of 2022 titled Inclusive Campus and Anti-Discrimination. This policy ensures that we ban acts of discrimination, especially against women (point d); against perpetrators of women discrimination; and impose sanctions on perpetrators (points d–e). We also guarantee the rights of all academics, including female students, staff, and lecturers at the university (point g). The Student Admission Center (PPMB) has declared that UNAIR will not tolerate any discrimination or harassment based on factors such as race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, disability, sexual orientation (including gender identity), and will fully adhere to all laws, orders, and regulations related to non-discrimination, equal opportunity, and affirmative action. This non-discrimination policy applies to the admissions process and all university activities.

We have implemented maternity and paternity leave policies that explicitly support women’s participation. These policies are outlined in Rector’s Decree No. 52/UN3/2020 concerning Employee Leave Permit Service Standards. According to Attachment V, employees are entitled to maternity leave, which includes one month prior to and two months following childbirth. Additionally, Circular Letter Number 175 of 2022 (point 4) and Number 187/UN3/HM/2021 (point i) highlight the maternity and paternity policies at UNAIR. These policies allow women to take maternity leave and enable men to take leave to care for their wives and babies.

As our support for mothers, Universitas Airlangga provides a childcare facility to fulfill the needs. Known as Terpadu Childcare and conveniently located on Campus C, this center is open to the students as well as general public. It accommodates children aged between three months and seven years, ensuring a wide range of accessibility. Terpadu Childcare boasts a team of experienced caregivers, including professionals with qualifications in Psychology and Public Health, ensuring top-notch childcare services. It is also equipped with a curriculum that meets learning and teaching standards, providing a nurturing environment for children while their parents pursue their academic and professional goals.

Universitas Airlangga provides child care accessible for staff, lecturers, and public. Anak Ceria Early Education Center (PAUD Anak Ceria) is a facility under the auspices of the Faculty of Psychology that was established in 1995. PAUD Anak Ceria provides childcare services, early childhood education programs, and kindergarten. There are separate rooms for infants and toddlers. The educational model used is inclusive education that puts normal children and children with special needs in the learning process of togetherness. The childcare facility is paid and open to the public, lecturers, staff, and students. Those who are registered on our campus get a special price. We also have free childcare units in several faculties, including the Faculty of Public health and Faculty of Social and Political Science.

Anak Ceria Early Education Center 

Universitas Airlangga supports the mentoring programs designed for women, with the majority of participants (about 80%) are female students. We commit to empowering female students collaborate with Griya Khadijah, especially for character development, entrepreneurship workshops, spiritual and faith development, and fostering women’s empowerment through public speaking and leadership training. Furthermore, the Student Executive Board in Faculty of Humanities and Girl Up UNAIR held a workshop, which was attended mostly by female students. The workshop titled “Get to Know Sexual Harassment and Defend Yourself” gave an understanding of sexual violence and the procedures for reporting such cases to female students.

Universitas Airlangga tracks and addresses the issue of gender differences in graduation rates. In 2022, out of 8,270 graduating students, a significant proportion, 5,731 or 69% female graduates. We continuously commit to ensure equitable opportunities for all graduates, focusing on closing any gender-related gaps. The university achieves this through the Directorate of Career Development, Business Incubation, and Alumni (DPKKA). This directorate offers comprehensive support for graduates, including female graduates, by providing career development programs, workshops, mentoring, training opportunities, and regular evaluations. Graduates also have access to job fairs and various other development initiatives, all designed to facilitate successful career journey.

Universitas Airlangga is committed to ensuring the protection of individuals who report instances of discrimination within the university through Rector’s Decree Number 25 of 2019. It provides guidelines for handling complaints from informants. Circular Letter Number 162/UN3/HM/2022 further reinforces the university’s stance against discrimination within its community. It affirms that the university safeguards whistleblowers of discrimination from facing any educational or occupational disadvantages. Also, the university has established a user-friendly whistleblowing platform accessible through website. The university places the highest priority on maintaining the confidentiality of all information shared. This platform empowers individuals to report any wrongdoing that not only results in losses but also poses a threat to society. Through this system, the confidentiality and security of the personal information are guaranteed, creating a secure environment for them to come forward.
