SDG 7 : Affordable And Clean Energy

University Measures Towards Affordable and Clean Energy

Regarding to ensure energy efficency, Rector’s Decree Number 1074/UN3/2021 is created as a guildline for renovation and new construction buildings. We have also incorporated smart building procedures outline in PP-UNAIR-MUN-01-17, and green campus management practices stated in Rector’s Decree Number 1050/UN3/2021. Thus, renovations and construction of new buildings must follow energy efficiency standards. As an implementation, we integrate solar panel systems into campus buildings as an electricity source. Vertical gardens also build in most of faculty buildings as land efficiency and air quality improvement. It includes sensor taps, temperature control system and smart lighting as the energy effiency technology.

Universitas Airlangga has an annual plan for achieving energy efficiency upgrading. The Rector Decree Number 1074/UN3/2021 organised our energy-saving policy, meanwhile Decree Number 1050/UN3/2021 elaborates on its Green Campus initiative. We also implement the smart building procedures detailed in Decree Number PP-UNAIR-MUN-01-17. For our improvement, a significant upgrade has been done for building facilities and infrastructure, including solar panels installation as renewable energy source, LED lighting and sensor taps transition, current sensors for energy metering, and automated resource management systems. Smart lighting control and integrated LED lights with motion sensors are also used in the buildings. We have also maximised our rooftop as green spaces.

Universitas Airlangga measures and manages our greenhouse gas emissions within our campus. As much as 0.52 CO2 equivalent emissions per person are calculated from the 2022 data. From all of our campuses, the biggest emission came from the main campus C. We commit to offset our carbon emissions through composting management in our Compost House to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. As stated in Rector’s Decree Number 1839/UN3/2018, our compost houses are equipped with good compost management procedures. In reducing our students and staff’s commuting emissions and private vehicles, we provide costless green transportation, i.e., bicycles, and electric bikes, otherwise, Flash bus (Fast Local Area Shuttle) is provided as sustainable commuting transportation between campuses. We also improve pedestrian walks within campuses to encourage students to cut emissions by walking to places inside our campus.

Universitas Airlangga’s energy efficiency plan is outlined in a Rector’s Decree No. 1074/UN3/2021 and 1050/UN3/2021 about Energy Efficiency at our campus. It regulates about saving electricity consumption as well as energy efficiency standards to all buildings at UNAIR. Also, we have innovative strategies and the utilization of New and Renewable Energy (EBT) by installing our solar power plant (solar cell) as our dedication to sustainability. We are currently developing Windmill Hydroelectric Power Plant with the capacity reaches 4,000 Watts in our main campus. This on-going project is part of our commitment for reduce energy consumption from purchased electricity and contribute to a sustainable future. We also upgrade our sustainability practices to green campus, energy conservation goals, and eco-friendly transportation.

For identifying energy consumption, Universitas Airlangga measure and monitor the GHG emission. We found out that electricity consumption is the highest throughout our campuses. Our main Campus, Campus C, is identified for using the highest energy due to the its function as the main workplace for staffs and lecturers. However, we also explore the potential for renewable energy usage in our campus. They conduct research on renewable energy with a focus on solar cells. The research results show the high energy potential of the sun in which we plan to utilise our open space nearby the Lake for solar power plant. Apart from economic benefits, solar cells provide advantages to be green and sustainable campus.

Policy number 471/UN3/HM/2022 underscores the institution’s commitment to adopting sustainable investment practices, explicitly shifting Universitas Airlangga’s investment from the carbon-intensive energy industry to climate-friendly industries. Also, in our practices, we ensure our suppliers are guaranteeing sustainable resources for our procurement as defined in Policy number 472/UN3/HM/2022. These policies reflect our commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability.

Energy and The Community

Universitas Airlangga regularly hosts educational programmes on energy efficiency and clean energy. In rural area where electricity is not accessible, we conducted training on how to assemble solar power plants (solar panels). In another small island, Gili Iyang Madura, we help the local community to develop a wind power generation system (PLTB) for electricity sources. Until now, it is used for street lighting and to support the irrigation system in the village. The AirFeel version 3, known as AF5 and AF7 have also introduced to several villages as a tool for monitoring weather conditions and measuring air quality levels. This tool functions to support the clean water availability for families.

Our goal is to create sustainable and liveable futures. At Universitas Airlangga, we have a commitment to be Net-Zero Campus by 2030. We support the transition to a net-zero future by setting targets, metrics, and policies to reduce the direct impact of our operation to environment. The use of solar power plants and wind power plants; the provided green and sustainable transportation; and the automation systems are the work we do within our campuses align with our commitment. Not only for our internal, but also support rural area in Pasuruan and Madura, where facing electricility shortage, with an assemblable solar and power plant. Otherwise, we also educate our community in a national seminar entitled Renewable Energy integration: Policy, Technology, and Stability Challenge.

Universitas Airlangga is committed to grounding the use of renewable energy in the local industry which focuses on developing EBT. We successfully installed a wind power plant (PLTB) for the community in the Gili Iyang Island. This wind power plant still supports the local small industry to lowering their energy cost by generating their ownelectricity. We are also supporting farmers in Gempol and Sumenep to use solar power plant for hydroponic systems and lighting systems. Additionally, Photosynthetic Microbial Fuel Cell (PMFC) technology is our on-going research to be developed for providing SMEs an electrical energy from shrimp cultivation waste and microalgae (Scenedesmus sp.) with the capability to produce electricity in microquantities.

Universitas Airlangga supports government efforts in developing clean energy policies and energy-saving technologies. Universitas Airlangga is also working on this for the wider community, such as the construction of Hydroponic Installations, Automatic Nutrition Dispenser Systems in Pasuruan, and Electric Bicycles and Solar Panel Shelters for E-Bike Charging in Sumenep. Airlangga Community Development Hub (ACDH) also collaborates with the Bintan Regency Government in providing facilities and training on fish drying equipment with advanced technology, through the use of solar panels. Universitas Airlangga is also active in introducing renewable energy to the public through national seminars with the theme Renewable Energy integration: Policy, Technology, and Stability Challenge. Presenting the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Executive Vice President of PT PLN (Persero), and the Head of the Electrical Technology Development Division of PT Pembangkit Jawa Bali.

UNAIR Forges Collaborative with Local Governments: ACDH UNAIR Initiatives Transform Communities Across Regions

Universitas Airlangga assists start-ups on the low-carbon economy and technology usage. We launched a new initiative aimed at providing assistance to start-up companies focused on sustainable solutions. For example, startup Natry, as a field that focuses on palm oil management. Natry has the main target of developing the economy, society and the availability of electrical energy in order to increase regional income, as well as overcoming energy and electricity problems in Margajaya village. Apart from that, SRE UNAIR introduced renewable energy innovation, i.e., nikuba and solar panels. Those are renewable sources which is producing less waste and help in decarbonisation.
