Low-carbon Energy Tracking
Universitas Airlangga measures low-carbon energy usage, with a primary source from solar panels. In 2022, we recorded a total low-carbon energy usage of 2,211 GJ from these solar panels. Furthermore, we switch some appliances into smart lighting systems to promote energy-consumption conduct. However, we also introduce green transportation with electric-based machine to reduce our carbon emission.
Environmental Education Measures
Universitas Airlangga regularly hosts education programmes and campaigns to raise the community awareness on climate change. In our seminar, we collaborate with Universiti Teknologi MARA, Brunel University London, Climate Change Expert at the Dutch Embassy, the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and professional institutions, aiming at raising public awareness about climate change in various sectors, especially among academics. The seminar was closed with reforestration project at Mount Ijen hillsides. Within our student, we have the Society of Renewable Energy (SRE) hub which is established for the campaign focusing on emergency of the new renewable energy transition as one of the solutions to climate change-related issues. SRE conducts campaigns for Surabaya’s high school students. We aware that sustainability topic is not wide-spread in Indonesia, thus we try to educate the importance of renewable energy as our sources to tackle the climate crisis to the young ones.
Mengenal Perubahan Iklim Melalui Airlangga Climate Fest International Webinar Series 2022
In supporting SDG 13, Universitas Airlangga’s climate plan is to be net zero-carbon campus by 2030. We set plan to reduce at least halves of the operational emission within 5 years, and to be net zero campus in 7 years. Our commitment is stated on policy number 133/UN3/HM/2021 addressing the climate action plan. In this plan, it regulates the effort to reduce carbon emissions, reduce energy consumption, and increase green open space in UNAIR. Additionally, we actively contribute in Indonesian University Climate Conference to succeed in achieving Indonesia’s zero emission target in 2050. We help to create and establish the Regulatory Governance focusing on renewable energy sources. We also part of National Research Consortium aiming to conduct climate crisis prevention.

Universitas Airlangga engages in cooperative planning for climate change disasters, collaborating with the government. We have the Integrated Disaster Risk Reduction Research Group to research and community service focusing on disaster-resistant families in Central Sulawesi. This required to organise a focus group discussion with the Regional Disaster Management Agency, the Sigi District Environmental Service, and the provincial government that facilitated advocacy and planning for the implementation of a multi-hazard prevention system for disaster-resistant families. It led to the establishment of a Disaster Risk Reduction Forum in the Central Sulawesi region. However, in preparing our community of the disasters caused by climate change, we regularly host outreaching programme to educate the mitigation strategy when facing severe natural hazard and extreme weather conditions.

Universitas Airlangga supports local and regional governance in climate change disaster management, including early warning and monitoring. In 2022, our faculty public health sector and the School of Health and Natural Sciences, organised a dedicated initiative on distaster risk management in partnership with the Regional Disaster Management Agency. This project centered around the integration of disaster risk reduction, emphasising the need for community preparedness for severe natural disasters and multihazard disasters within the Banyuwangi district. However, we extend our support for Ponorogo Regional Disaster Management Agency. We established early warning system and the fostering of disaster response communities. This project included comprehensive training sessions, covering topics from risk management to addressing basic needs.

Universitas Airlangga actively collaborates with NGOs on climate adaptation and mitigation initiatives. Our postgraduate students organised disaster risk management training in Mojokerto attended by 225 volunteers from the Indonesian Inter-Democratic Radio (RAPI), with the specific purpose of providing education and training for effective disaster response and adaptation. Furthermore, we hosted the Airlangga Climate Fest International Webinar Series in 2022. This webinar series brought together various stakeholders, including government agencies, climate change experts, international universities, and the NGO “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Waste Management Site” from Banyuwangi. The primary objective of this event was to raise public awareness about climate change across diverse sectors.

Universitas Airlangga continuously measures our carbon emission based on ISO 14064 and GHG procotol; and we set target date on reaching net zero-carbon by 2030. Circular Letter Number ___ 2022 shows our commitment and efforts in achieving carbon neutral. Our real action includes providing green and sustainable transportation facilities, energy efficiency and conservation programmes, water conservation actions, renewable energy usage from solar panel, non-motorised transportation (pedestrian and bicycle roads) availability, smart and green buildings implementation, green open spaces facilities, recycling and water filtration systems.
