Support of Arts and Heritage
In supporting sustainable communities, we offer public access to our heritage buildings, i.e. The Nederlandsche Indische Artsen School (NIAS) and the School Tot Opleiding van Indische Tandartsen (STOVIT) Both are cultural heritage buildings from the Dutch Colonial Government which located in Campus A. Nowadays, these buildings are still well-maintained and used by for learning and student clubs activities. We created the amphitheater in 2021 located in Campus B to facilitate for art, sports, and cultural performance. Nearby, we have Ethnographic Museum and the Mortality Studies Center which achieved Indonesian Purwakalagrha Award as part of the Musem Awards. Both of the museums are function to educate our communities on people and culture.

Universitas Airlangga provides free and accessible library services for the public, including books, working spaces, library class, and various range of publications. To facilitate our student with unlimited knowledge, we have been consistently upgrading the libraries assets in each campuses located in Surabaya, Gresik, and Banyuwangi. Our libraries provide more than 223,000 books and free access to millions of e-journals including international-certified publication in SCOPUS, ScienceDirect, JSTOR, etc. Moreover, we also consistently manage library classes to upgrade student ability in digital skills, such as: introduction to managing journal references class, Microsoft Word basic skills, literature review class, etc. With more than 4000 public visitors and 400,000 visitors in total per annum, our libraries are reliable source of knowledge and keep on updating the service to be more dependable.
Every faculty in Universitas Airlangga has actively holding a wide range of exhibition spaces for galleries, works, art, and museum which are accessible for public entrance. On our UNAIR History Night (HISNIGHT) 2022, faculty of Humanities presented a topic about “A Celebration of The Urban Story”. The exhibition displayed Antiques from our History and Culture with the art of photography. We had another exhibition displaying the archive from covid-19 pandemic aiming to keep the documentation on our efforts to survive from the global epidemic. As awarded museum, the Ethnography Museum and Mortality Studies Center are accessible for public as well since 2016. We welcomed the delegates from University of Marburg, German to learn about our people and culture in those museums.

Universitas Airlangga provides public access to open and green spaces for free. We have Campus Forest Park as our a green open space, located around the Lake area. This Campus Forest Park not only offers views of the freshwater lake and shady trees, but also provides aesthetic seating, some gazebos, a jogging track area to facilitate our students, staffs, and public. Nearby, we created an Icon Park providing open theater area and iconic photo spots of Universitas Airlangga. Another open space is the Amphitheatre in Campus B, facilitating for entertainment and art performances. This space is 1,854 square metres, with a stage provided in the center, and is able to accomodate more than 2000 attendees. Our FoodPoint has also accessible for communities offeriing diverse food choice including traditional food and western meals.
Universitas Airlangga actively contributes to local arts through annual public performances such as choirs, traditional music and dance group, theatre performances, and orchestras. In 2022, we presented more than 8 theatre performances of Gapus Theatre, one of them was held to welcome the Festival of Avant-Garde Performing Literary Arts (FESSPA) during a tour performance in Pasuruan. Additionally, we celebrated The Cultural Festival annually to preserve our traditional music instrument, Angklung performed by Surabaya Angklung Percussions. However, on that event, we presented other performance from Fibra Dance Team, Gapus Theatre, Alpha Cheerleeding, and Japanese traditional dance. Not only that, on the annual concert of Airlangga University last year, they perfomed ATIRATH: Precompetition Concert, in a collaboration with Chandelier Choir.

As an institution, we provide projects to record and preserve intangible culture, especially local culture. One of them is the Ethnographic Museum and the Mortality Studies Center. The Faculty of Cultural Sciences also preserves the Museum of History and Culture as a learning media and knowledge about objects of ancestral cultural heritage. Then as a cultural activist, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences also organizes cultural performances and performances in the form of the 2022 Cultural Festival. This is a project to remember the importance of local culture and knowledge as the identity and foundation of society, amidst the swiftness of foreign cultural elements. There is also a Student Activity Unit called UNAIR Dance and Karawitan (UKTK). UKTK UNAIR focuses on learning traditional dance and has won third place in the PEKSIMIDA (Regional Student Art Week) 2022 competition.

Sustainable Practices
In reducing our students and staffs commuting emission and private vehicles, we provide costless green transportation i.e., bicycles, and electric bikes; otherwise, Flash bus (Fast Local Area Shuttle) is provided as sustainable commuting transportation between campuses. We also improve the pedestrian walks within campuses encouraging students to cut emission by walking to places inside our campus. These facilities mean to promote a healthy lifestyle for students and the academic community and as an effort to reduce carbon emissions in our campus.
UNAIR Enhances Sustainable Commuting with New Campus Facilities
In reducing our students and staffs commuting emission and private vehicles, we provide costless green transportation i.e., bicycles, and electric bikes. Meanwhile we also ensure safe parking facilities for bicycles within our campuses. As sustainable transportation, we subsidised shuttle for students and staffs using our Flash Buses (Fast Local Area Shuttle) to travel between Campus A, B, and C. These buses are free of charge for inter-campus mobilisation in decreasing reliance on private cars and motorcycles. We also improve the pedestrian walks within campuses encouraging students to cut emission by walking to places inside our campus. Otherwise, we apply the regulation to limit the parking area for only senior students.
Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR): A Path Towards Sustainable Commuting and Carbon Emission Reduction
Universitas Airlangga implements remote working by providing various online platforms to reduce commuting. There is an E-office as a platform for online correspondence between units within the university and third parties. Therefore, our the electronic correspondence system (e-Office) is no longer use printer-paper works in its correspondence except for important documents. In addition, we are equipped with eSPD as a financial system platform for submitting official travel and eForms for attendance that require an online signature. There is also “Tendik Kita Campus Application” to record the attendance of all employees.

Universitas Airlangga provides affordable housing for employees in collaboration with PT Yekape Surabaya. The residensial area called “Griya Airlangga” as a form of facility for employees to get affordable houses in Surabaya. In addition, we provided lecturer house complex located inside the campus B area which was built before Griya Airlangga. All of these housing units are strategically located near the university and equipped with adequate facilities. This affordable housing facility is an effort to provide comfortable facilities for lecturers and teaching staff.

Universitas Airlangga provides affordable housing for students through dormitories for male and female students and residential area called Griya Khadijah. The student dormitory is located in the campus C area which can accommodate hundreds of students, including international and underprivileged students. The male dormitory is a 5-story building with 96 rooms accomodating 384 students, while the female dormitory is an 11-story building with 206 rooms for 618 students.

Universitas Airlangga gives priority to pedestrian access within its campus environment, regularly revitalising pedestrian sidewalk at Campus B and C for safety and comfort. Campus B revitalisation areas include Faculty of Psychology, te Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, library, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, and Language Center. The pedestrian area is connected to the west-exit gate of Campus B. At Campus C, we widen the pedestrian zones in both side of the roads which extended to the main gate exit. Additionally, Campus A also enhanced the pedestrian access by adding shady roof and sufficient lighting at night to make it comfortable and safe. However, all the pedestrian sidewalks are provided with ramps and paths for dissability.

Universitas Airlangga partners with the local government, including the Surabaya Government, in cooperative planning to develop a smart city. This involves multiple sectors, such as health, tourism, and the economy. This partnership promotes sustainable development by enhancing community services through the integration of various elements in urban areas, encompassing governance, the economy, quality of life, the environment, and human resources. The goal is to provide people with accessible yet affordable housing options. Furthermore, we collaborate with the People’s Housing, Settlement Areas, and Human Settlements division of the East Java Provincial Government to engage in discussions regarding house price estimation and property evaluation.

Sustainable standards are curently applied to our newly constructed buildings. We use environmentally friendly energy for electricity. There are the windmill-shaped Power Plant (PLTB) at Campus C Lake, solar panels in front of the Joint Lecture Building (GKB), speed bumps at the entrance, and smart lighting systems. Regarding land management, the university also continues to increase green open spaces in all faculties, such as vertical gardens, gazebos, mini forests, and rooftop gardens.

Universitas Airlangga repurposes brownfield sites for constructing new facilities. The Amphitheater, a spacious performances area of 1,853.59 m2, was formerly a parking lot for Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. Additionally, the central canteen in Campus B was once unused lecturers residensial area and now equipped with a rooftop Park and FoodPoint areas. The Faculty of Law has established a new structure on formerly unused land for academic space function. However, our future plan is to relocate Faculty of Vocational Studies to the Faculty of Humanities current building, to fill out the empty buildings. This underscores Universitas Airlangga’s commitment to sustainable building practices.
