Supporting Land Ecosystems Through Education
Universitas Airlangga actively encourages the preservation and use of natural landscapes, including forests and wilderness areas. Student community service program collaborated with colleagues from various countries in the International Community Services (ICS) event. We educated local residents about the importance of sustainable environmental management while raising international awareness about Alas Mendiro ecotourism and Wonosalam conservation. Additionally, with the Association of Local Public Broadcasting Institutions,we held an event discussing the Social Forestry Program aiming to engage the commuties living in and around forest with sustainable forest use and management. We are also contributing on conservation and reforestration on mountain’s hillsides.
Universitas Airlangga has implemented sustainability policy (327/UN3/HM/2021) that oversees the entire process of food production on campus. This comprehensive policy is designed to ensure the sustainable farming of resources, prioritising their preservation to prevent any potential threat of extinction. It encompasses a range of strategic measures, including stringent monitoring of farming practices and the implementation of innovative techniques to minimise the environmental impact. It also highlights the priority of purchasing food supplied from local farmers to ensure the economy sustainability. Other than that, we are making effort to ensure that our egg supplies coming from cage free chicken as our commitment to ethical farming.
Universitas Airlangga is committed to the preservation and expansion of biodiversity, involved in protecting threatened ecosystems and their flora and fauna. We involved in collaborative efforts in mangrove conservation in the Cemara Banyuwangi coastal area. In collaboration with the Banyuwangi Forestry Service and the local government, we planted 150 new mangrove seedlings. It is an initiative to provide natural infrastucture as erosion reduction and storm absorban. Besides, we put our best effort to preserve the sea turtle species that is being critically endangered. The School of Health and Life Sciences (SIKIA), Banyuwangi Sea Turtle Foundation, and the Environmental Service worked together to the hatching process of sea turtles in our Intan Box Incubator developed by our talented professors. 42 baby turtles hatch successfully from its eggs and was released into Cemara Beach in Banyuwangi. Protecting the hatching process is our initiative to treat endangered animals.
Universitas Airlangga is committed to prioritising comprehensive knowledge about natural ecosystems. We have conservation class held by the School of Health and Natural Sciences (SIKIA) and accompanied by conservation experts from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and also forest rangers from Baluran National Park. The class held at Baluran National Park contains scientific discussion activities, workshops/seminars, and wildlife observation. Besides, we have scheduled safari tour educational program. It is located on Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI) II East Java, enabling the participants to interact more closely with wild fauna. All the programmes we offered impart essential knowledge about the region’s rich flora and fauna, thereby increasing ecological awareness for all.
Universitas Airlangga students partnered with PT. Pembangkitan Jawa Bali to organise an educational and outreach initiative program for local farmers in Madiun with a focus on sustainable land management practices for agriculture. This program is centered on increasing the resilience of sustainable agricultural ecosystems through collaborative and innovative management. We keen to help porang farmers to optimise crop yields in various seasons and manage agricultural land sustainably. Not only that, through the community service team, we assist the agricultural practices in Paringan Village for agro-diversity. It is hoped that this outreach program can educate local communities to implement sustainable land management.

Supporting Land Ecosystems Through Action
Universitas Airlangga is committed to managing the environment sustainably regulated in letter number 326/UN3/HM/2021. This policy is the basis of the campus’ commitment to supporting the preservation, restoration and sustainable management of terrestrial ecosystems on and off campus. We engage in conservation efforts and the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems as well as campus forests (point c). We also create reforestation program by empowering students to actively participate in maintaining various tree species, including the Yellow Palm, the native Regu Palm, and the ecologically important Calathea. However, vertical gardens has built throughout our faculty buildings for innovative and sustainable landscape design.
Universitas Airlangga is committed to assisting the government in identifying, monitoring and protecting any species mentioned on the IUCN Red List, as well as species listed on the national conservation list, whose habitats are located in areas affected by the university’s activities, outlined in policy number 326/UN3/HM/2021. We put the policy on action by conserving sea turtle species to reduce the issue of low egg hatching rates which leads to endangered species. Seeing this fact, we maintain the existence of turtle species with turtle hatching incubator technology, called Intan Box (artificial incubator) made by FKH SIKIA UNAIR lecturer. It is successfully release 42 hatchlings to Cemara Beach in Banyuwangi.
Universitas Airlangga exhibits a commitment to integrating local biodiversity into their planning and development processes. Notably, the comprehensive approach outlined in Rector’s Degree Number 1050/UN3/2021 concerning the Green Campus policy We have a vegetable garden with hydroponics on Campus C, right behind the student dormitory. In addition, we also have a 7,000-square-meter campus forest park that features a concept of green open space located near Lake Unair. This campus vegetable park and forest park show that we’re incorporating local biodiversity into our planning and development processes.
Rector’s Decree Number 1050/UN3/2021
Universitas Airlangga is highly committed to maintaining the integrity of its local ecosystem, documented on policy number 326/UN3/HM/2021, representing a great initiative designed to combat the detrimental impacts of alien species on campus. It governs the civitas academic to reduce the impact of alien species, or species originating from outside the campus ecosystems that breed in the campus environment and can damage the ecosystem (point e). With an unwavering focus on ecological balance and sustainability, we continues to strictly implement and monitor this policy, ensuring the long-term vitality of the campus environment.
Universitas Airlangga held Outdoor Fun Learning Based on Go Green (OFAL-Green), engaging with local community of Balenrejo village, Bojonegoro district, Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDES), village authorities, and the State Forestry Public Company. Planting of 120 young trees in village reservoirs areas is our goal to preserve communal land ecosystems, address environmental crises and global warming. In addition to tree planting, the program educates students in year 4, 5, and 6 of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Nasy’atul Ulum about the significance of environmental stewardship and the value of initiating green practices or reforestation for young generations.
Land-sensitive Waste Disposal
Universitas Airlangga complies with Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 22 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Environmental Protection and Management containing water quality standards. In implementing this policy, we installed Sewage Treatment Plant Using a sewage treatment plant (STP). It efficiently processes water, ensuring the neutralisation of both acidic and alkaline elements before it is either discharged or safely stored in concrete tanks. The process consists of six steps: waste water collection, re-treatment, biological treatment, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection, and distribution. This treatment has two primary purposes, including flushing toilets and irrigation plants that used in all faculties and units. By processing water before discharging, it protects our ecosystem from water pollution.
In tackling plastic waste problem, we formed our regulation in Rector’s Regulation Number 2904/UN3/2019 and Circular Letter Number 3410/UN3.1.10/TU/2019 for reducing single-use drinking bottles. Bottled-water with single use packaging and plastic bags are prohibited since 2019 throughout the campus foodcourt. As an alternative, the university provides drinking water dispensers and glasses in any office as well as meeting rooms. Most of our faculuties have also supported these policies by providing tumblres for lecturers and staffs which must be brought in any activities including meetings. The university encourages all members of the academic community to opt for cloth bags and bring their own reusable tumblers or water bottles in order to reduce the usage of plastic packaging. In pursuit of a plastic-free campus, UNAIR has partnered with the Student Executive Board to raise awareness and advocate for initiatives aimed at minimising plastic waste.
Rector’s Decree Number 2904/UN3/2019
Universitas Airlangga is committed to managing medical waste and hazardous materials to prevent environmental pollution. We renewed a policy regarding Standard Operating Procedures (SOP-UNAIR-DSP-DSP23) in 2021 and Rector’s Decree Number 2910/UN3/2016. Hazardous waste management is carried out in all facilities, including the Special Dental and Oral Teaching Hospital, Universitas Airlangga (RSKGMP Unair). RSKGMP Unair handles waste carrying infections and contains hazardous substances. Therefore, waste processing at RSKGMP Unair complies with Minister of Health Regulation Number 7 of 2019 concerning Hospital Environmental Health.
