Supporting Aquatic Ecosystems Through Education

Universitas Airlangga actively encourages the preservation and use of natural landscapes, including forests and wilderness areas. Student community service program collaborated with colleagues from various countries in the International Community Services (ICS) event. We educated local residents about the importance of sustainable environmental management while raising international awareness about Alas Mendiro ecotourism and Wonosalam conservation. Additionally, with the Association of Local Public Broadcasting Institutions,we held an event discussing the Social Forestry Program aiming to engage the commuties living in and around forest with sustainable forest use and management. We are also contributing on conservation and reforestration on mountain’s hillsides.

Airlangga University is committed to offering educational and outreach programs to local communities regarding sustainable fisheries, aquaculture and tourism management. through 2 community service programs organized by the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, UNAIR. This program was attended by the PKK community, Sutorejo, Surabaya, and elderly groups in Pakal, Surabaya. This program contains assistance and training in cultivating freshwater fish using an aquaponic system as well as education regarding the implementation and analysis of regular water quality measurements. Apart from that, Airlangga University also focuses on advancing the tourism industry. Through the Airlangga Community Development Hub program, which is implemented by the Faculty of Advanced and Multidisciplinary Technology. In this program, FTMM Unair provides education and training regarding the importance of the tourism industry which is attended by the fishing community of Pengudang Village, Riau Islands.

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) raises awareness about over, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing for local or national communities by providing free community services in some areas. The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences held the International Conference on Fisheries and Marine Science in 2022 with the theme “Optimizing the Utilization of Aquatic Resources Through the Blue Economy Program Towards Achieving the SDGs Program.” It covered several topics, including Fisheries Management and Coastal Ecosystems, which covered educating people about the dangers of illegal fishing that might cause dead zones. This summit was an excellent international platform for academics, researchers, industry participants, and students around the world. Besides, the community services team is also involved in the arrest of the perpetrators of illegal fishing to save marine habitats. The summit  also facilitated participants to plant fish apartments and mangroves in the coastal area of Situbondo, East Java.

Supporting Aquatic Ecosystems Through Action

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) hosted events to promote conservation and sustainability of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and marine resources. A short-course programme named Airlangga Global Ocean concentrates on the threat of aquatic ecosystem and promotes action to save the oceans for vialibility. Another programme, SEASOLDIER, is our collaboration with marine conservation NGO to conduct webinars, discussions, and case studies. It aims to acknowledge our communities especially young ones about the importance of protecting marine ecosystems to tackle the issue on SDG 14. In 2022, our Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences hosted Airlangga Global Fisheries Symposium to assist the government in addressing the carbon cycle issue, which currently contributes to climate change. The event includes the implementation of mangrove planting along the coastline of Wonorejo Mangrove Ecotourism in Surabaya.

Universitas Airlangga enforces a policy, identified as policy number 327/UN3/HM/2021, which governs the sustainable management of seafood sources from aquatic ecosystems is sustainably harvested (poin 2). Additionally, the university encourages students as well as canteen to create processed food products sourced from aquatic ecosystems in a sustainable manner. Examples of such products include crispy balado catfish noodles, tilapia fish nuggets, tilapia solo sausages, and catfish spring rolls. In addition to food production, students receive instruction on how to promote and market these food items, including selling them during the The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences Anniversary celebration.

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) through The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) partnering with the Fish Cultivator Group (Pokdakan) to address water pollution in Cumpleng Village, Lamongan, with focus on maintain and extend existing ecosystems and their biodiversity, of both plants and animals, especially ecosystems under threat. This partnership involves offering guidance on addressing the issues of heavy metal contamination and plastic pollution in aquatic environments that pose a risk to ecosystems and the diversity of species. Furthermore, UNAIR has released 42 hatchlings onto Cemara Beach in Banyuwangi. These hatchlings are the outcome of a successful hatching process in the Intan Box incubator developed by professors from the The School of Health and Life Sciences (SIKIA), in collaboration with the Banyuwangi Sea Turtle Foundation, the Environmental Service, and BCA. This initiative aims to protect turtles, which are endangered animals facing the threat of extinction.

Airlangga University (UNAIR) collaborates with industry in technology or practices that enable the marine industry to minimize and prevent damage to aquatic ecosystems. Through the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK), UNAIR has six research centers, namely Fish Health, Fisheries Biotechnology, Environmental Management and Fisheries Resources, Fish Nutrition and Post-Harvest, Fish Processing, and Fisheries Bioproducts. Some of the research results that have been carried out include the use of fish waste to make organic fertilizer, the development of salted fish processing technology, and studies of coral reef ecosystems in coastal areas. This research center combines basic aquaculture and fisheries science as well as fisheries technology to achieve sustainable aquaculture and fish products. As well as several collaborations that have been carried out, including with Papua State University, Brawijaya University, and the fishing company PT. Putra Tirtamas Megah, regarding the fisheries and marine sector. Airlangga University conducts research that discusses technology to prevent damage to aquatic ecosystems, including Specific Ultra Violet Absorbance (SUVA) research. This is a method for detecting carcinogenic levels in fresh water. Carcinogenicity in water can be accurately identified using appropriate methods selected from available alternatives.

Water Sensitive Waste Disposal

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) complies with Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 22 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Environmental Protection and Management containing water quality standards in the appendix as national water quality standards as well as the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia No. P.68/Menlhk/Setjen/Kum.1/8/2016 concerning Domestic Waste Quality Standards as guidelines for water disposal. Implementing this policy, UNAIR has a water harvesting process called a Sewage Treatment Plant, consisting of six steps: waste water collection, re-treatment, biological treatment, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection, and distribution. This treatment has two primary purposes, including flushing toilets and irrigation plants that used in all faculties and units.

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has an action plan to reduce plastic waste on campus through Rector’s Decree Number 2904/UN3/2019 concerning the Prohibition of Using Plastic Drinking Water Packaging and/or Plastic Bags at UNAIR. In an effort to minimize plastic waste in the UNAIR environment, the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) strictly enforces a ban on the use of bottled drinking water in the faculty area. This prohibition is regulated in Circular Letter Number 3410/UN3.1.10/TU/2019 concerning Instructions Not to Use Bottled Drinking Water. Also, UNAIR ensure that canteens are not allowed to sell bottled mineral water and all kinds of other bottled drinks. UNAIR urges all academics community to use cloth bags, bring their own tumblrs or drinking bottles, reduce plastic packaging to become environmentally friendly cutery. To realize a zero plastic campus, UNAIR collaborates with the Student Executive Board to socialize and campaign for efforts to minimize the use of plastic waste.

Circular Letter Number 326/UN3/HM/2021 about Efforts to Prevent and Protect Marine and Land Ecosystems from Damage

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is dedicated to enhancing the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems through a combination of monitoring initiatives and tangible environmental efforts. As part of their commitment to assessing the well-being of aquatic ecosystems, UNAIR has partnered with the Surabaya City Agriculture Service and students engaged in the Airlangga Global Fisheries Symposium (AGFS). This yearly event aims to address the carbon cycle challenge, which is currently contributing to climate change, while also annually monitoring the condition of aquatic environments. Besides, UNAIR, through the School of Health and Natural Sciences (SIKIA), empowered and monitoring 25 members of the fishermen group as conservation cadres for sustainable turtle life on Santen Island, Banyuwangi. Conservation actualization carried out by SIKIA together with fishermen groups is an effort to realize the protection and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources.

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) collaborates on the conservation of protected fish with the Indonesian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Affairs for the conservation of protected fish species, ways of managing protected fish, and proper breeding of endangered fish. In addition, UNAIR collaborates with the Denpasar Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center to strengthen human resources for the protection and preservation of fish species; the collection and exchange of data on protected fish species; and the utilization of infrastructure for strengthening human resources in handling protected fish species. Moreover, UNAIR held Coastal Area Care 2022 on the Cemara coast of Banyuwangi to increase awareness among students and local communities about protecting mangrove ecosystems in coastal areas. There were representatives of the Banyuwangi Forestry Service and representatives of the Banyuwangi Regency Regional Government, as well as around 60 participants from the community.

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) collaborates with Universitas Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universitas Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), and local communities such as the Fish Cultivation Group (Pokdakan) to work together to increase awareness and education regarding heavy metal and plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Apart from that, as an effort to prevent heavy metal pollution from continuing to decrease, UNAIR also carried out mangrove planting actions with local communities, students and teachers of MA Al Ma’arif, Cumleng Village, Brondong, Lamongan. Mangroves can play an ecological role and help absorb heavy metals in waters, so they can help improve the ecosystem and maintain the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems. Not only that, UNAIR also runs an innovative program (ecobrick) in collaboration with the community around Banyuwangi. This program is a means of educational tourism, beach health and marine ecosystem preservation

Universitas Airlangga applies technology in watershed management to maintain the diversity of aquatic species. One of the several research projects carried out by Universitas Airlangga is SUVA research. This is a research on freshwater technology as an early detection of carcinogens. The technology Specific Ultra Violet Absorbance (SUVA) is a method for detecting carcinogenic levels in fresh water to maintain biodiversity. In addition, to managing biodiversity in the Brantas river area, Universitas Airlangga and the surrounding community held social services to clean up the watershed. This is carried out to reduce the impact of pollution to reduce the negative impact on the diversity around the watershed.
